Investment Policy & Design Committee / ESG Working Group

This group advances best practices in DC investment design—especially QDIAs—by promoting research, practical education, and materials that help plan sponsors and policymakers make informed decisions. It curates case studies, develops “how‑to” resources, highlights the value of institutional investment approaches, and provides technical support to other DCIIA committees.

Featured Committee Projects

Content is provided in brief, focused topic papers designed to provide a helpful overview of each area. Each asset class paper offers an overview of strategies/structures available and highlights key considerations for implementation and otherwise.

Managed Accounts: Asset Allocation Review | Paper #4

This fourth paper in the managed account series aims to offer additional transparency about MA providers’ investment and personalization approaches.

Managed Accounts: What to Consider When Selecting a QDIA | Paper #3

This third paper in the managed account series considers several questions and answers to assist plan sponsors in working with their fiduciary committee to evaluate, select or make changes to the DC plan’s qualified default investment alternative (QDIA).

Managed Accounts: Due Diligence and Implementation Considerations | Paper #2

In this second-in-a-series white paper, we discuss how plan sponsors can determine whether managed accounts could be right for their plans.

Managed Accounts: A Primer | Paper #1

This paper includes a review of the basics of managed accounts, a summary of their usage over time, a description of how they can be offered, and considerations for determining if they are right for a particular DC plan, and if so, in what ways.

Choice and Evolution in Defaults

In this research report by the DCIIA Investment Policy & Design Committee, building on past DCIIA work, we examine current defaults and emerging solutions in the context of the themes, also considering current and likely future adoption. We provide, as a call to action, questions to reflect and act on for plan sponsors, service providers, and advisors in an Action Kit.

Investment Menu Influences in DC Plans

Designing an optimal menu of investment options for a defined contribution (DC) plan that will meet the needs of an organization’s diverse set of demographics is a challenging task for plan fiduciaries. In this report, the DCIIA Investment Policy & Design Committee examines best practices and considers five major influences on investment menu design.
